WHAT IS THE WAVEWISE YOUTH SURF PROGRAMME?

WAVEWISE Youth Surfing Programmes aim at our 13-18 year old youth’s personal need of guidance through adolescence which can be one of the toughest times in life. It works with the difficulties resulting from the challenges our youth has to face in those years:

In just a little amount of years our youth has to grow from a child to an adult: Society expects our youth to become more independent, parents expect them to become responsible and make good choices, their peers are demanding to stay up to date with everything going on around them and relationships are a very new and challenging part of their life. On top they are facing an overload of hormonal chaos and body changes.

How easy is it to lose track and feel overwhelmed by it all? And how easy is it to slip into unhealthy coping mechanisms like drugs, violence or mental illness?

WAVEWISE helps our youth to cope with all these difficulties through using one of the funnest ways to learn from: Surfing!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE TO A “NORMAL” SURF PROGRAMME

WAVEWISE is a Surf Therapy Programme, aiming at helping our youth to deal with every day’s challenges by learning important life lessons through the medium of surfing.

Surfing itself brings already a massive amount of advantages to a young person’s life: Physical activity, connection to nature, grounding, belonging…

In Combination with WAVEWISE Surf Therapy Sessions and the experiential learning approach a young person gets a tool to understand and reflect on their own actions and how it affects people around them and their future pathway. They learn to make good choices, they develop problem solving skills and gain a new tool when feeling low.

WAVEWISE is run by social workers who use strength based social work methods and activity based learning. Experiences in the water applied to theoretical strategies create life lessons which stick with our youth as they feel them straight away. Life Lessons are not just talked about – they are experienced and therefore will be remembered.

HOW ARE YOUTH SURF SESSIONS PAID FOR?

Our WAVEWISE Youth surf programme involves no costs for our young people.

To be able to sustain these youth surf programmes, WAVEWISE offers adult surf programmes which finance the surf sessions for our youth! One adult surf session covers one youth surf session!

HoW DO I SIGN UP MY CHILD?

It is important to understand that WAVEWISE youth programmes aim at youth who WANT to be part of it. We ask you to NOT CONVINCE your child to participate.

We ask you to NOT sign up your child – we expect your child to apply for a spot him-/herself.

The small amount of spots in this programme is for youth who want to learn/improve surfing skills and who will actively contribute to the programme by being ready to learn more about themselves. If your child is keen to participate, we expect your child to give back to his/her community in the same manner as his session was funded: Get One – Pass one on –> One Youth Programme results in one group volunteering for some social aspect in our community (this will be part of our programme).

IF your child is keen and wants to take part, he/she can apply for a spot here: BE PART OF WAVEWISE!

IF you want your child to experience the positive change Wavewise can create for your child but he/she is not ready to work in a group setting, WAVEWISE is more than happy to get to know your child in a One-on-One Setting and introduce it to the idea of the programme. Wavewise is happy to help you find the right sources to get these One-On-One Sessions funded. Please just contact us: surf@wavewise.co.nz
